Design Museum London is a museum dedicated to showcasing contemporary designs in architecture, digital, fashion, product and graphics that captures the spirit of the modern era and promotes or delivers change. It is a museum founded in 1989, originally located by the River Thames in the Shad Thames area in SE1 London near Tower Bridge. The museum operates as a registered charity, and all funds generated by ticket sales aid the museum in curating new exhibitions. Entrance is expected to be free to the museum’s permanent collection display, "Designer Maker User".

In 2016, Design Museum has been moved into the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, London. This landmark from the 1960s, a Grade II listed building that had stood vacant for over a decade, was developed by a design team led by John Pawson who made the building fit for a 21st century museum, whilst at the same time retaining its spatial qualities.
The Design Museum, founded by Sir Terence Conran, originally opened in a former banana ripening warehouse on Shad Thames in 1989. John Pawson started working on the new site in 2012. His previous work includes the Sackler Crossing in Kew Gardens and the new Cistercian Monastery of Novy Dvur in the Czech Republic.

Speaking at the launch of the museum's new location, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "London is the design capital of the world. We’re a global leader, attracting the very best companies and talent, so it makes perfect sense that we should have the world’s best design museum."

John Pawson aimed to create "calm, atmospheric spaces," making it easy to explore the museum. The oak staircases have strip LED lights on the handrails and bannisters to add excitement to walking around the space.
